The third Tuesday of September has arrived, which means the hats are out once again for the Prinsjesdag parade. This year, there is one particularly striking detail: a hat with a UvA connection.

There is no doubt that the hat parade is one of the most iconic parts of Prinsjesdag. But for the UvA community, today’s edition is just that little bit more interesting than usual: Rianne Letschert (D66), Minister of Education, Culture and Science, is wearing a hat inspired by the research of Wim Noorduin, Professor of Self-Organising Matter by special appointment.

The floral shapes visible in the design of the hat and accompanying shoulder piece are based on the microscopic structures in Noorduin’s research, which look remarkably like little flowers under a microscope. The “Hat of Wonder”, as the headpiece is called, was designed by artist Malou Beemer and is said to symbolise the power of collaboration between science and art.
