On Wednesday, the HvA and the UvA will once again have their own Boards

The joint Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) today took one of its last joint decisions: to split up. After the representative bodies of both institutions gave their approval, the Board was able to take this decision, which has been approved by both supervisory boards.

In an official statement, the UvA and HvA announced that the personnel union, as it is officially called, will be dissolved on 1 March. Part of this decision is that the various staff departments will also be “unbundled”, but the shared services will remain together. These services include the Administrative Centre, Facility Services, ICT Services and the Libraries. The UvA’s employee participation council agreed to the plan last Friday, but did identify some points for attention in the implementation of the plans to further improve the shared services.

These mainly concern the effective monitoring and evaluation of the collaboration. “Representatives from the faculties will be closely involved in this process. At the same time, we want to capitalise on the benefits that the collaboration has for the quality, satisfaction and efficiency of the services. We will be developing this into an action plan in the coming period,” the statement reads. The Student Services (UvA) and Student Affairs (HvA) departments will remain separate for the time being and will continue to do so in the current situation.

Two Executive Boards

On 1 March, the UvA will launch an Executive Board consisting of Geert ten Dam (chair), Karen Maex (rector magnificus) and Kees van Ast (interim member responsible for operations and finance). A recruitment procedure for his replacement is currently underway. With effect from the same date, Huib de Jong has been reappointed as rector of the HvA and also acting chair of the Executive Board of the HvA. Nico Moolenaar is an interim member of the Executive Board of the HvA. A procedure for his succession is currently underway.
